Promotion Part II

Being Promotable

Promotion provides active encouragement to further your growth and development. Why is it important to be promoted? Promotions provide a reward for hard work, determination, loyalty, etc.

WELCOME!
I'm glad you're back. How did you apply last month’s information? Are/Where you launching a new product or service or simply trying to get your brand out into the world? Did you stop to think about how ad campaigns could help you? Did you re-evaluate your message, change /add a campaign, etc.? This month we are going to talk about how we become promotable and why we should do what it takes. We don’t have to spend our time wondering if it is favoritism. We are going to look at the
things we can do to take the guesswork out of our being promoted.
Also, as I do every month, thanks to everyone who reached out. I get more and more excited as I see what God is doing with and in my life. It is an honor and a pleasure to give you tips and help you learn from my successes and failures. Please stay subscribed to receive more information, success stories, tips, freebies and much more.

What kind of promotion are you looking for, personal or business?

•    From your level 1 job to a job that will eventually lead to a role in management.

•    From working for someone else to working for yourself

•    From a small business to a big business

•    From just being a boss to being a leader

As a business and life coach, I have heard: “I’m not sure how to get to the next step.” “How can I grow my business?” “How do I get to move into a more responsible role?”

As many of us envision our future, it often involves promotion. However, often we’re unsure how to achieve that goal. How does promotion happen? There are things that are important when looking to be promoted. First, understand the characteristics of promotable people (make sure you are promotable). Second, understand what it takes and commit to being promotable.

 A.  Characteristics of Promotable People

Promotable people are:

1.  Doers, not talkers.

Whatever the assignment, task, or objective, doers simply get it done right the first time, no drama or excuses, just results. They are often the first one in and the last one out. The clock does not dictate their time, completion does.

2.  Solvers, not excuse makers.

Promotable people see a problem, look for causes, and take actions to solve the problem. They don’t bring a problem without bringing a workable solution. In contrast, non-promotable people let their boss handle problems, or worse, complain about them.

3.  Selfless, not selfish.

They continually look for opportunities to lend a hand to others; ask for assignments others don’t want, and do them well with a smile; it’s always about the greater good, no job is beneath them.

4.  Respectful, not inconsiderate.

Promotable people respect everyone, regardless of what they do and where they came from; don’t gossip or get caught up in politics. They practice active listening instead of waiting to jump in with their point and place others first.

5.  Broad in their view, not single-minded.

Promotable people think about the big picture and how what they do affects everything/one else.

6.  Givers, not takers.

Promotable people give more than what is asked or expected; consistently produce to a higher standard; see a job that needs to be done, and if they can do it, they jump in and do it.

7.  Trustworthy, not unreliable.

Promotable people set a personal example of integrity that is bullet proof, no cutting corners. They do what they say they will do, don’t hang out with people of questionable character or motivation; don’t rationalize honesty.

B.  What will it take to be promotable, we must:

1.  Understand major components of management and leadership

Preparing yourself for promotion involves understanding key aspects. It is important to know the responsibilities and skills that come along with promotion. Depending on the job, exceptional leadership skills include the ability to:

·  Effectively communicate

·  Build and oversee teams

·  Manage resources

·  Budget

·  Motivate

·  Hold others accountable

·  Delegate

·  Deal with difficult people

·  Interview

·  Hire and fire

·  Write performance reviews

·  Have difficult conversations

That list is just a sample. You will need to handle other responsibilities not mentioned.

2.  Invest personal time

Set aside time to create a list of goals you want to achieve and the key skills you want/need. If you have them, great. If not, will your budget pay for college courses? Don’t let the lack of funds for education stop you. Your job may have college reimbursement or, as an entrepreneur, you will have to find a way. Check online for some training resources and develop a learning library. Then create a development plan (see Freebie Section) for yourself based on your key skills list and goals.

3.  Communicate interest

If you are an employee, communicate your desire to grow and develop. Don’t just use words, show them by implementing the information given in section A. above. You can vocalize your interest and as for a development plan. However, actions speak louder than words. You want to perform so that your supervisor comes to you with a development plan.

4.  Utilize the mentorship process

You don’t have to go it alone, find a mentor. You want to get feedback and support from someone who is where you are trying to get. Your mentor can help with understanding the expectations and provide insight into the skills needed for the role(s) you want. Do your part to make the most out of the time you spend with your mentor. If you show commitment, you will learn:

·  The best path to take

·  What skills you will need

·  Where to go to learn the skills your mentor recommends

·  Any networking/user groups which might be helpful

·  And any other  suggestions the mentor would have

5.  Look for opportunities to take on additional responsibilities

If you are an entrepreneur, this is easy. You will always have something to do. If you are an employee, one of the best ways to show your promotability is to show you have more in you than they thought. Ask for tasks your boss may have that are ongoing, as well as project motivated, that you can help with. You will show initiative, the desire for growth, and aspirations to broaden your skill set. Make sure you have completed your assigned tasks first.

If you want to be promoted, make sure you are intentional in how you live your life. Commit to promotable behavior and live it out. If you do, you will never have to worry about your career hitting a snag, or not being able to get the best jobs with the best employers.

Promotion is the church is a tricky concept. We often think it works the same way that it does in the business arena. In reality, it only does to a very little degree. The Bible is clear about how promotion works.

When you think about it, is a good salary enough or is there something else you want? Of course, there is. There’s something to be said for accolades. You want to be told, “I appreciate you. Thank you for your dedication and commitment”. Not only does it boost your morale, it also boosts the overall morale of the company. If you are an entrepreneur, you cannot promote yourself. However, you feel promoted when your business moves to the next level. How do you make promotion happen for yourself in someone else’s business or your own? You do the work, manage your time, exceed expectations, go the extra mile, etc., not just for a promotion. You work at this pace because of who you are. A promotion is just a natural outflow.

promotion you want.  If there is a particular role you want to fill, here is what you need to do:

·  Outline the key responsibilities associated with it.

·  Determine training and learning channels (internal and external).

·  Identify user groups, other associations, and other avenues to help you learn the right skills and network with the right people.

·  Find and develop a relationship with a mentor, formal or informal.

o  Establish goals, mentorship activities, and time frames to capitalize on that relationship.

Do you have signs/behaviors that show you want to and can lead?
Here are eight signs I believe are important if you want to be spotted as an employee who could go on to greater things.
1. You show a higher level of engagement
If you often have thoughtful suggestions and/or ask the right questions, you may well be leadership material. People who take an interest in the entire company and in other job roles within the organization are born leaders. By doing so, you appreciate the bigger picture and can see where you fit in. It’s also true to say that leaders engage with other people. If you are good at talking to the rest of the team and don’t spend all day isolated, you could well have the leadership qualities any company needs.

2. You are comfortable with failure
The best leaders recognize that failure is part of life. They also know when it’s time to take an experience hit and move on. Nobody enjoys failing, but some people are better than others at learning the lesson and pushing forward. If that is you, that is great! It shows you can learn from your failure or someone else’s. Beware of demonstrating these characteristics:

·  You hold grudges.

·  You are unforgiving when someone else falls short.

·  You get too hung up on your shortcomings.

If this is you, your supervisor will probably not see you as someone who would be good in a leadership role.

3. You have exceptional communication skills
If you want to be promoted, you must be a great communicator; meaning you convey your thoughts and ideas and  people understand. You don’t have to be the most vocal in the room. It’s not about how loud you speak or how much you say. It is about when you choose to speak and the quality of the words you say. If you are articulate, thoughtful and take the time to choose your words carefully, your boss may promote you next.

4. You know when to listen
Here are some listening tips if you want to be promoted:

·  Engage your brain before opening your mouth.

·  Listen because you want to, don’t listen because you “have to”.

·  Listen twice as much as you speak; it will help you lead well.

·  You don’t need to have all the answers; just be willing to ask questions.

·  Don’t wait for the answers to be given to you; do the research, and find the answers.

·  Be the one who shows you have been listening by how you work.

·  Be one who thinks and deliberates before reaching any decisions.

·  Don’t override other people’s thoughts and ideas in favor of your own.

5. You don’t need to show off
Pretentiousness is ugly. To be promoted, you don’t need to show off to prove your value or your worth to anyone. If you are good at your job and can inspire the rest of the team with a few carefully chosen words, your boss will promote you. If you need to crow about your success or put on a show in front of your colleagues, you will just rub people the wrong way. Also, you though you may not realize it; you are probably revealing some deep-rooted insecurities which won’t help you in a managerial role.

6. You can get the best out of others
If you want to get promoted, you know success is about getting the best from others, instead of using every situation to your own advantage all the time. If you are happy to give praise where it’s due and step back to let others shine, you are ready to be promoted. You want to show deep empathy and emotional intelligence. You also want to be confident enough in your own abilities that you don’t feel the need to hog the limelight when things go well. Employers give promotions to people who celebrate the success of others.

7. You can manage your responsibilities
For your boss to  promote you, you need to be able to juggle lots of tasks without taking your  eye off the ball. If you show you can handle extra responsibilities and take the additional work in stride while still getting your job done, promotion is in your future. If you panic, struggle or complete low priority tasks rather than high priority ones, you cannot manage your responsibilities; promotion would not be a good idea for the business you work for, nor you.

8. You know education never stops
The people who are promotable know learning never stops. They also know they will always have flaws and weaknesses to work on. Be open-minded to career development opportunities and seize every chance you get to pick up extra skills and taking training courses. Even if you have been in a senior position for a while, there’s always more you can do to make yourself an even greater leader. Keep in mind, your boss is focusing on your potential, not just your current performance. She will look for you to work to improve yourself and your team whether you are the team lead or not.

MORE From Ministry Development

Moreover, it is [essentially] required of stewards that a man should be found faithful [proving himself worthy of trust].

People frequently ask, “How does God choose whom He wants to use?” This is an important question to ask, and one that you should ask if you desire to be used by the Lord. Look at those whom God uses in a powerful and significant way. It will quickly become obvious to you that God doesn’t choose people simply because of raw talent or gifts. I heard it said, recently “God does not call the qualified. He qualifies the called.” There is a higher reason that causes Him to reach out and lay His hand on an individual. What is that reason?

 ·  What does it mean to be “faithful?”

This is a person whom God has found to be authentic, trustworthy, reliable, dependable, true, and unfailing.

 ·  What does it mean to be  “found?”

It means to find or to discover because of careful observance. We show God we are watching to see our actions and reactions. He allows us to see how we treat people, how we respond to pressure, whether we have the tenacity to stay on track when distractions try to thwart our obedience. If we put aside what we want for what He wants, etc.

God is omniscient, and He knows whether these characteristics are true for us. He orchestrates moments in time for us to see who we are and to develop the characteristics He wants us to have. He allows us to see how we live and how we go through various circumstances and situations. We get to see ourselves and how we act. Most importantly, we get to see if we are willing to yield to the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

A.  Before God taps us on the shoulder to give us a new assignment, He allows us to weigh how well we did on the last assignment. We get to ask ourselves with the help of the Holy Spirit, did we:

·  Do the assignment as He expected?

·  Finish it completely, or leave parts incomplete?

·  Do the assignment in a way that glorified the name of Jesus?

·  Make excuses for not doing the assignment at all?

If we can answer yes to the questions above, we fill “find” ourselves to be worthy of promotion and so will the Lord.

B. God wants us to know if we are faithful, trustworthy, reliable, dependable, true, and unfailing. God does not want us to work in confusion and ignorance. He allows us to see and discover who we are.

His master said to him, Well done, you upright (honorable, admirable) and faithful servant! You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little; I will put you in charge of much. (Matthew 25:23a - AMPC)

C. What do you need to be to become promotable in the kingdom of God? Here is a list that is not complete. It is a start, and the list is in no particular order. You need to be:

 ·  Faithful

It is very rare to find people who are completely faithful/reliable. Most of us start out with a desire to be faithful, but the affairs of life pull us away. You are promotable when you can continue to follow the will of God despite distractions. Faithful people are located and promoted by God. Let’s look at the Bible characteristics of a faithful person. Faithful people are:

o  Trusted by those they serve.

o  Confidence keepers. They don’t reveal secrets or talk about private matters, publicly.

o  Loyal. They don’t cheat, steal or abuse their positions.

When you are faithful where God has placed you, He will know He can trust you with even more.

·  Diligent

When you are  diligent, you are:

o  Conscientious in work and duties.

o  Industrious, hardworking, meticulous, and thorough.

o  Do more than what’s expected.

o  Dependable, punctual

o  Constant, stable, and focused.

o  Thoughtfully plan and are not hasty in your decisions.

o  Resourceful and care for what they have. You are a good steward.

·  Flexible

We cannot be all things to all men with a rigid heart. We have to bend and accommodate viewpoints that differ from ours to win souls. If we remain unyielding, God’s answer will be, “Not yet!” because you refused to make the necessary changes.

·  Obedient

For the record, there is no such thing as partial obedience. It is vital that we take a serious look at ourselves and make sure we are obedient more than we are disobedient.

o  Are we keeping the promises we make?

o  Do we find solutions to our problems in the Bible and apply what we read/learn to our lives?

o  Have we shown the Lord that He can trust us during tough times?

o  Has God shown us it would be wiser for Him to choose someone else?

·  Spiritually Introspective

If we want to receive God’s best for our lives, there are some steps we can take. Ask yourself:

o  Am I asking the Holy Spirit to show me who I am “daily”?

o  Am I renewing my mind with God’s truth?

o  Do I repent of bitterness, resentment, and jealousy every time the Holy Spirit shows it to me?

o  Am I walking in complete forgiveness?

o  Do I resist the urge to judge?

If you can not answer yes, you delay your promotion.

·  A Servant

When we’re focused on promotion, we’re focused on ourselves. Stop. God knows what we want. We must shift the focus off our dreams and desires and spend some time helping others achieve theirs. Promotion begins on the inside. Having a servant’s heart is vital to promotion. We must remain faithful in service, in the lowest of positions, even when we know our God-given destinies.

·  Humble

We have to be humble to have a servant’s heart. However, walking in humility goes far beyond that. If we want to be promoted within ministry, actually in any other area, all pride has to go. There are some who may think they don’t have a problem with pride. They would be wrong. We are all human, and the ego is a part of every human being. Pride is something every single person has to combat. Pride isn’t just an unkind attitude—it’s a dream killer. It will rob us of everything we’re believing for and halt our miracles (James 4:6). That’s why the enemy wants to tempt us into being prideful (it’s what caused his fall). He knows he can devour us when he can get us to be like him—proud, defiant and rebellious. We qualify for promotion when we work from a place of  humility. Being humble is not a onetime thing. It’s a daily effort. What does humility look like? Humility:

o  Thinks of others first.

o  Is content behind the scenes.

o  Doesn’t push its way to the front.

o  Willingly submits.

o  Graciously receives correction.

o  Makes adjustments.

o  Doesn’t ruin an apology with an excuse.

o  Expects nothing and appreciates everything.

o  Accepts responsibility and doesn’t shift blame.

o  Is easy to live with, work with and be with.

·  Honest

Everyone values honesty, and it is nonnegotiable with God. There is a greater demand for integrity from Christians because of who we represent. Our lives are letters about God anyone can read by looking at us. We are being watched, read like a book. The world hears every word we speak and sees every action we take. Our lives are a testimony to the unsaved about who our God is, and we have a responsibility to represent Him accurately. How important is integrity? To qualify for promotion, you must live your life with integrity—down to the tiniest detail. How does the Bible define integrity? If you are honest, you:

o  Live a blameless life.

o  Do what is right, even when it looks like it would not be helpful to you.

o  Keep your word, no matter what.

o  Show up when you say you’re going to show up.

o  Do what you say you’ll do.

o  Give what you say you’ll give.

o  Return things you borrowed (like rental cars) in better shape than when you got them.

o  Return excess change accidentally given to you.

o  Go back to pay the right amount when you were undercharged.

o  Give your employer the full amount of work agreed upon.

o  Refuse to gossip or speak poorly about others.

o  Lend without charging interest.

o  Refuse to be bribed.

o  Don’t lie or embellish the truth.

If you’ve been waiting for promotion and allowing the Lord to develop your character, meeting these prerequisites is key. Remember, it is God’s will for you to be promoted! As long as you are in line with His Word, you don’t have to fight, beg, or beat the system. He will get you to the place you need to be.

MORE From Personal Development

 1. Manage your Daily Activities

Create a daily plan that will help you fulfill your responsibilities and even get ahead of your work.

       a. As an Employee

When you set mini goals, you can get through quicker. When you show you are a hard worker and how dedicated you are to succeed, you show you can handle more responsibility. Also keep in mind, if you are ahead of schedule, you’ll be in a better position to handle unexpected situations.

        b. As an Entrepreneur

When you set mini goals, you can prioritize what needs to be done each day so your time is better spent. For your personal business, time really is money. Use it wisely.

2. Manage Responsibilities and Priorities

     a. As an Employee

Avoid saying yes when you don’t have the time to complete the task. If you say “yes,” make sure you can suggest a reasonable due date for the assignment. You can even ask which current priority you can shift. Then you can put all your energy on the new task. Show that you can be available to complete the task at hand, even if it’s something that is unappealing to you. Show you can complete any assignment that is handed to you!

     b. As an Entrepreneur

Don’t over sale and under produce. If you say “yes,” make sure you can do what is being asked in the time frame requested. If your client has flexibility, you can always suggest a different due date. Show that you can be available to meet the request or have the integrity to say you can’t. That will mean more to your client!

3. Keeping Pushing Forward

     a. As an Employee

Show that you want to go to the next level by taking on (and completing) assignments your immediate boss would handle. When you can go beyond your job duties, you show you can handle more responsibility and position yourself for a promotion.

     b. As an Entrepreneur

Always work to increase your capabilities. Train to do assignments you have not done before. Expand your horizons and your skill set. You can promote yourself and get more clients when you can do more.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Identify a New Way

     a. As an Employee

Instead of doing the job the way it has always been done, make proposals that will help your department succeed and lower costs. If you can come up with a more effective and efficient way to do your job, tell your boss about it in a formal proposal. This shows you are not afraid to challenge the status quo.

     b. As an Entrepreneur

Show your clients a better way to do the job you’ve been asked. Make proposals that will help your client more, even if it means they will pay you less. If you can come up with a better way to do what needs to be done, especially if it costs less than expected, your client will keep coming back. There is a good bet they will send other clients to you. As a side note, always take time to review your web presence and/or expand revenue streams.

5. Look for Ways to Showcase Your Talents without being arrogant

     a. As an Employee

Your employer will notice your talents when you use them as you accomplish each milestone. If your negotiating skills are your strong point, tackle projects that will showcase your ability to negotiate. Make sure your boss knows it was your negotiating skills that made the project successful.

     b. As an Entrepreneur

Make your client/prospect know what you can do. Look at their project and highlight things you have done for other clients that are along the same lines as what they are looking to have done. If you are a talented writer and editor, let them know you can handle projects that require writing.

6. Don’t Be Shy, Be the Leader You’re Meant to Be

     a. As an Employee

No employer wants to promote the person who only wants to follow. Show your leadership skills any time you take the reins on a project. If you show you can lead a team to the next level, then your boss will be more likely to view you as a candidate deserving of a promotion.

     b. As an Entrepreneur

Be confident. No client wants to hire someone who cannot toot their own horn. Show what you have done and what you can do anytime you get the opportunity to. Have your website available with samples and testimonials.

7. Say You Want a Promotion

     a. As an Employee

Make sure your employer knows you want to be next in line for a promotion should the opportunity come up. Take the time to mention your plans to grow with the company as you talk about your long-term career goals. You can have this conversation with your boss or even your boss’s boss.

     b. As an Entrepreneur

Make sure your client knows you want to be considered for any project they are doing. As you are finishing the current project, talk about how you can help with the next one. It does not matter if they have identified a next one or not. Research what the company is doing that you can be a support to. During a conversation, you could mention your availability.

8. Be Assertive NOT Aggressive

     a. As an Employee

Employees worthy of a work promotion are assertive. They go after what they want for themselves in their career without sabotaging a coworker. Make sure you get noticed in the workplace by being the assertive one who is always there to take on the task at hand and see it through from the beginning to the end.

     b. As an Entrepreneur

You cannot sit back and wait for work to come to you. Market yourself and go after what you want for your company and your career. You don’t want to boost yourself by criticizing someone else. Make sure you get noticed in the marketplace by being the one who gets the job done. Get leads and recommendations because everyone knows you as the one who under sales and over produces. You are the one to go to for on-time completion of project and  who is effective, and who will efficiently see a project through from beginning to end.

9. Show up for Events

     a. As an Employee

While promotion is often based on your job performance, it doesn’t hurt to get on good social terms with the one(s) who will promote you. Find common interests and talk about these subjects during your lunch break or downtime at work. If it’s all business between you and your boss, then you don’t give him or her time to see you as a human being and care about your success on a personal level.

     b. As an Entrepreneur

Use networking to form relationships with others, in like or unrelated fields, to help you find new customers, make alliances, and grow. Effective networking makes you known. The premise is, the more people you meet, the more people there will be to get to know and remember both you and your business.

10. Be There by Asking How You Can Help

     a. As an Employee

People who are promotable are team players. When you show your employer you can lead a team or be part of one; you’re illustrating your versatility. Employers promote people who can take on the leadership role during a project or assignment.

     b. As an Entrepreneur

At some point, most people need help with a project. It does not matter if they are clients of yours or not. As you talk about what you do, you identify how you can help and where your expertise lies. You may not always be able to provide a solution, but listening and making suggestions will make you memorable. When there is a project that falls in your wheelhouse, you will get the call.
