Attitude

What kind do you have?

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of my attitude on my life. My attitude is more important than education, financial status, social standing, current situation, failures, successes, and what people think, say, or do. It is more important than what I look like, my talents or my skills. It can make or break a company, a church and/or a home. We have the opportunity every day to choose the attitude we will display. What are you choosing?

Your attitude affects your performance and your response in every area of your life. Your attitude has a profound impact on the way you lead people. It affects the way you sell and the way you serve customers. Your attitude has a direct impact on how you communicate and collaborate with others, how you contribute to the culture of your work environment, and how you perform your daily tasks and responsibilities. Ultimately, your attitude shapes your success and your joy. I refrain from saying happiness because happiness is fleeting. You want joy that sustains itself no matter what circumstance(s) you are in. All things being equal, the person with the best attitude will win. Even if all things are not equal, the person with the best attitude usually wins.
One important thing to realize is…you determine your attitude. Actually, it is one of the few things in life over which you have total control. If you want to perform at your best, and if you want to maximize your potential, you must take control of the life-shaping power of your attitude. Please understand, developing and sustaining a positive attitude is not merely a quick-fix motivational technique. It is a disciplined skill that you must practice and learn.

What is Attitude?
Attitude is the way you look at life. It is the way you choose to see and respond to events, situations, people, and yourself. Your attitude is not something that happens to you. You choose your attitude. Your thoughts create your attitude, and you choose your thoughts. You decide what you feel about and how you will handle the events in your life. Will your mindset be positive or negative? If you want to feel better, you have to think better. In order to be positive in the way you feel, it is necessary to be disciplined in the way you think. How you respond is determined by your mindset and how you think. You must train your mind and use it wisely. A distinguishing characteristic of consistently successful people is their ability to maintain a positive and proactive attitude. Successful people produce better outcomes because they do not clutter their minds with pessimism, negativity, or cynicism; nor are they distracted by them. As a result, they can focus all of their mental energy on exploring solutions, taking effective action, and learning how to get better.

What is Negative Attitude?
A negative attitude results from negative thinking. Here are some more results of negativity. It:
  • Causes a lack of mental discipline.
  • Focuses on the problem and does not look for solutions or opportunities.
  • Can only survive on a steady diet of negative thinking and negative self-talk.
  • Is habit-forming, and it affects you and the people around you.
  • Affects you physically.
  • Causes you to be stuck in a place where there is no hope of ever being better.
What is Positive Attitude?
A positive attitude results from a disciplined and deliberate way of seeing, thinking, and responding to life. Here are some additional effects of a having a positive attitude. You:
  • Have mental discipline.
  • Are intentional.
  • Have mental toughness.
  • Are not naïve, and do not sugarcoat problems.
  • See and acknowledge problems and then focus on finding solutions and opportunities.
  • Look for the positives within a problem.
  • Have the habit of being positive.
  • Have a refreshing/encouraging impact on you and people around you.
  • Feel better physically.
In order to have a positive and proactive attitude, you must discipline yourself and be deliberate about the way you see and think about events, situations, people, and yourself. A key element of mental discipline is paying attention to and managing your self-talk. Self-talk is what you say to yourself about situations you’re facing. It is how you choose to interpret and explain the events you are experiencing. Managing your self-talk is critical because words carry thoughts, and thoughts create feelings.

Here’s how it works: Several people could see a scene. Each person will interpret that scene based on the attitude they have. Each person determines what she will choose to focus on and the words she will use to express her focus.
  • A person with a negative attitude will focus on a situation and say something like, “That’s a stupid idea. It will never work.”
  • A person with a positive attitude will look at the same situation and say something like, “That’s an idea. I’m not sure if it will work, but let’s explore it further and find out.”
Negative people use phrases like “never” and “always.” Positive people use language like “possible” and “maybe” and “explore.” Because attitude is so immediately responsive to language, the negative words will trigger negative feelings, and the positive words will trigger positive feelings.

Having a positive attitude does not mean you ignore problems. It does not mean you will gloss over hard issues or disregard what is challenging. Quite the contrary, having a positive attitude means you see the situation more accurately and thoroughly because you do not lock-in on the negative aspects of the situation.

A person can make himself happy, or miserable, regardless of what is actually going on in his/her life just by changing their thoughts about the situation. The most successful people are those who learn to take charge of what they think about. Simple disciplines for improving attitude:
1. Be aware of your attitude. Note how you respond.
2. When your attitude becomes impulsive or negative, change what you are thinking, change your perspective, give place to a different way of seeing it before you respond. 3. Be aware of the things that trigger a disruptive attitude in you. Anticipate. Plan ahead. 4. Pay attention to your thoughts. Productive self-talk need to be a habit. Is your language helping or hurting.
5. When there is a problem, acknowledge it. Then immediately focus on finding solutions and opportunities for action.
6. Ruthlessly eliminate blaming, complaining, and defensiveness from your life.
7. Invest in yourself. Don’t spend all of your time watching other people’s lives.
8. Start every day with a time of reflection and preparation. Discipline yourself and be intentional about the way you start your day. Put yourself in a discipline-driven frame of mind.
9. Be patient. Be tough. It takes time to build a winning attitude.
10. Keep things in perspective. Never lose sight of the big picture. Where in your life could you use an attitude adjustment?

The news, magazines, online headlines, social media, etc. seem to be full of bad news about the economy and the prospects for the business community. It is easy to get drawn into this negativity and to feel very depressed about the future. If the media were presenting the news in a more positive light, would we all feel more optimistic and positive?

Our attitude influences our behavior even though we may not be aware of it when it’s happening. Most of our attitudes are shaped by our experiences, both past and present. Everyone experiences different situations and are influenced by different people. As a result, everyone’s attitude is shaped differently and everyone responds differently in a particular situation. Our attitude also influences those around us and vice-a-versa. Having a positive attitude makes us productive, deal with any problem effectively and look at failures as a means to introspect and improve ourselves rather than losing all hope and giving up. Whereas having a negative attitude will have a completely opposite effect. Take the time to evaluate your attitude and make the changes necessary to enhance your life.

No one can control what happens. Trying to control what happens in your life is a trap. What you can control is your attitude toward what happens to you. Take a step back and change how you see the situation. You will then change how you react to it.

MORE From Business Development

What is better for your business, a positive or a negative attitude? You can answer that question by answering these:

Who would you buy from?

·  A shop that is not looking its best, with staff who are talking to each other about how bad things are and the customers are not being acknowledged.

·  A shop that is tidy and well looked after, where the staff greets you in a welcoming manner.

·  A consultant who is positive and upbeat, who tells you about a great idea you can use in your business and which he has had success with in other companies.

·  A consultant who is very bleak and talks about how many clients he/she has lost because everyone is cutting their budgets.

What is the impact of your attitude on your business?

·  If you maintain a positive attitude, those around you will pick up on your positive energy. Everyone in your company will feel positive and customers will want to do business with you.

·  If you maintain a negative attitude, people will not want to be around you, your staff will feel demotivated, and customers will not want to buy from you. Your business will deteriorate.

Your attitude rubs off on your existing and potential customers, your staff, your suppliers, your investors and all those that you come into contact with. With a positive approach, you:

·  Will feel in control and confident.

·  Will perform at your best.

·  Will not damage performance and paralyze your productivity.

However, taking a positive approach is not enough on its own. You also need to have a positive plan that focuses on making sure your business is in the best shape to weather the downturn and maximize the short and longer term performance of the business. This may be by improving productivity, enhancing customer service, changing your marketing activity, maximizing your repeat business, developing a new product or service, training staff, or reviewing your cost base.

How to maintain a positive attitude?

·  See things from a positive outlook. It is easy to focus on the negative when there is so much negative news around. However, look for the positive side and focus on this.

·  Be aware of your thoughts. Focus on how you think about different situations. When you see a list of businesses closing down in your sector, do you immediately think the same thing will happen to your business, or do you see it as an opportunity to find new customers and maybe even increase market share? Challenge any negative thoughts and turn them into positives.

·  Present a positive attitude toward others. Even if you are feeling down, make sure you present a positive attitude to everyone you deal with. This will help you feel more positive and make others feel positive, too.

·  Always keep your successes in mind. Focus on what has gone well and what you have achieved. Learn from the things that have not gone so well.

·  Be careful who you associate with. Surround yourself with people who have a positive attitude and avoid those who are negative.

·  Allow your business goals to inspire you. What are the goals for your business? Revisit them and make sure they are still relevant. Make sure all your current actions support your goals.

Decide to have a positive attitude and see what a difference it makes to you and your business. If you do, you will find that not only will it maximize the performance of your business, but it will also have a positive impact on other areas of your life.

MORE From Ministry Development

thoughts, your energy and, most of all, the actions you take.

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church … a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our attitudes.”

Charles Swindoll “Strengthening Your Grip”

The saying, “Your attitude is your choice!” is a catch phrase. However, it is true and can have a tremendous impact on your life. Attitude is so important because it determines our actions, and our actions determine our outcomes. It’s so simple, yet if you apply it, you will see the profound ripple effect it produces. According to the Mayo Clinic, the words we say and the attitude we have in life have a huge effect on our health. Researchers have found that people with a positive viewpoint on life have an increased life span, lower rates of depression, greater resistance to the common cold, and even better cardiovascular health! When we expect the best, that is often what comes our way! Having a positive attitude does not come with just saying it and then all your problems go away. The choice of attitude lies in four areas:

Our Attitude Is Determined by What We Say

What you say can preserve life or destroy it; so you must accept the consequences of your words. (Proverbs 18:21 - Good News Translation).

This verse has an interesting promise for us, one that is both a poignant warning and a wonderful pledge. If we speak words of life, the result is often a life-giving and rejuvenating ministry. If we are always negative, the result over time is often a ministry that is draining and damaging to us and those who are members or even just visitors to our church/ministry. If we always expect the worst to happen, that is what we usually get. However, when we expect the best, that is often what comes our way! It could even be the same circumstance, and one sees the worst while the other finds the best in it, and it all comes down to choice.

Our Attitude Is Determined by Who We Focus On

Don’t let selfishness and prideful agendas take over. Embrace true humility, and lift your heads to extend love to others. 4 Get beyond yourselves and protecting your own interests; be sincere, and secure your neighbors’ interests first. (Philippians 2:3-4  - The Voice Translation).

Selfishness often motivates negativity. The church is to be a place of refuge and healing. Negative people don’t have time to minister to anyone else because they are too busy finding fault and/or talking about how something has affected them. Support and solutions come when our focus is totally on God; anxiety comes when our focus is half on God and half on our problems. If we can get our focus off ourselves and onto the Lord, the negative attitudes will fade away.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

(Isaiah 26:3- New Living Translation).

When we encounter issues, or when other bring their issues to us, we can choose to concentrate on the problem, focus on how it is affecting us, try to solve it on our own, or we can decide to focus on Christ. We can give Him our problems and ask Him to show us a solution. When we “chose” to go to the Lord, we shift our focus off our problem(s) and on to God. We then open ourselves to see the situation through His eyes and listen to what the Lord is trying to teach us. We get the “solution” from Him.

Our Attitude Is Determined by Where We Look

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. (1 Corinthians 13:12 - New Living Translation).

Negative people tend to use hindsight rather than looking forward. If the church/ministry is continually being led by God, change is inevitable. We can gain nothing from the longings of the way we used to do things and/or condemning ourselves and others after the situation has passed. Those who are negative look at the past, either with undue fondness or regret and the future with unnecessary foreboding. If you believe God, you must believe Him in all things. If you trust God, you must trust Him in all things. If you want to think and speak positively, adopt a mentality which remembers this verse:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. (Jeremiah 29:11 - New International Version).

The best is yet to come! When you believe that, it changes how you think about the work you do for your church/ministry. It also changes what you think about you personally, your family, and your future. For those who place their faith in Christ, the best truly is yet to come!

Our Attitude Is Demonstrated by How We React

All Christians
Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters.[a] Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. 9 Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing. (1 Peter 3:8-9 New Living Translation)

There are many things in church/ministry and life in general which happen that are out of our control, yet how we respond to those things is entirely up to us! What you will find in your church/ministry tomorrow is largely based on how you handle what you face today. You cannot choose what member in the church will have a concern. God adds to the church. You cannot pick the circumstances into which each person was born, the family they grew up in, the talents & abilities God gifted them with, etc. You cannot determine whether they will use what they have to support or oppose the policies of  the church/ministry. We continue to do what God has called us to do with this in mind:

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28-29 - King James Version)

However, you can choose what you are going to do in any situation. Things are going to happen in ministry which you didn’t plan on. You will make messes and you will have to do chores that are not your favorite. However, how you view these times and react to them is up to you. This could end up being the best or worst year for our church/ministry; it’s your choice.

MORE From Personal Development

what your situation is, it’s never too late to change your attitude.

There are benefits to having a positive attitude.

1. You can have a more purposeful life.

Instead of wanting to be happy, which is based on what is happening at the moment, you want purpose. Your journey might not always be perfect. However, you can prevent yourself from being bogged down with worry about who you are, what you have or don’t have, or what your condition your life is in. You do that by living on purpose with a positive mental attitude. Looking on the brighter side of life and going down the road with an eagerness brings out the best in you. Being purposeful has no price! Best of all, you can share that feeling with other people. You never know how far a little kindness can go for a stranger.

2. You can experience amazing health benefits.

There is nothing more valuable in your life than your good health. A positive attitude is key to keeping yourself healthy. Scientific research has proven that people with a positive attitude are healthier physically and mentally than someone without one. What exactly does this mindset grant you?

·  Physically it strengthens your body, boosts your immune systems, speeds up disease recovery, and reduces the risk of a heart attack.

·  Mentally, you are more alert, have less stress, and at a lower risk of depression and other mental health problems.

The best benefit of all? A positive outlook helps you live longer. Positivity doesn’t just help you wake up and be excited to greet the day, it also helps keep you as healthy as can be.

3. Your positivity can lead to success.

Have you ever met a successful person with a negative attitude? I believe the answer is no. Again, studies have shown that someone is far more likely to become successful if they are positive. Why? Positivity causes them to look for the opportunity for a great payoff in a situation, not just how the situation could go wrong.

4. You have more energy.

Positivity leads to excitement, and excitement is an adrenaline overload. When you are positive, you wake up ready to do your best and enjoy the day. Do you know a person who, no matter how early it is, has a seemingly endless amount of energy? They also are probably bubbling with boundless zeal. With more energy, more can be done. You can channel it into your work, relationships, and/or hobbies, and see dramatic results. Positivity also helps you focus and have more enthusiasm; it’s the best energy booster of all time.

Having a positive mental attitude is one of the most important things to develop in life. More energy, better health, a greater chance at success, and an overall more fulfilled life all show just how important having the right attitude is. Your attitude in life determines a lot more than you would believe. Why wouldn’t you want to wake up and be excited to greet the day? Work on a positive attitude and you will slowly see an awesome change in your life!
