Staying Committed to Change

How can you remain committed to the change you decided to make? Sometimes making a change will take longer than you first expect. Don’t quit, you MUST allow your journey to play out. Do you feel, in your gut, you are on the right track? Then find the patience to keep going. Don’t cutoff your success prematurely.

Committing to the change

I define commitment to change as the level of enthusiasm you or your employee has towards meeting the goal. It is the feeling of responsibility that a person has towards the change being made, mission, and vision, either personal or organizational. We will discuss the importance of commitment, the benefits of commitment, tips you can use to improve commitment, and some steps to fully committing.

 A.  The importance of commitment.

 There are several reasons commitment is important. One of the most important reasons is it allows you to make the change you wanted to make by sticking to your vision. Without motivation, you could lose all you worked for over the years.

 Commitment leads to better productivity.

 *  You run into more problems because you are not focused.

 There are more risks because of poor attitude.

  You are engaged, not committed. Not as attentive, productive, responsible, and energetic about the work.

B.  The benefits of commitment.

Committed people make dreams come true. A committed team works for the long-term and the future of an organization or any business. Here are some benefits of having a team that is committed to working:

   * You increased productivity, yours and the teams

   * Your targets are met

   * Your work is “fun” not tedious

   * You add value personally and corporately

C.  Tips you can use to improve commitment.

 I believe you can rate high levels of satisfaction with work commitment and engagement. We achieve most great things in this world by perseverance, hard work, and dedication. These qualities don’t just show up in a day. A person develops these qualities over the years.Here are some things you can do:

Build a strong team

Teamwork does wonders! Whether individual or as an organization, have a work ethic where working in teams is important. Achieving targets together makes hard tasks look easily achievable.

Outline what is expected

A well-informed team is an asset. I don’t know anyone who does not want to be a part of a success story. Therefore, it is important to communicate the reason for the change, vision, and mission clearly. This way, everyone on the team knows what to do. Clarity of thoughts is important. It brings with it the determination to work and achieve excellence.

Be transparent

Make sure there are no hidden agendas with the team. All members should be a part of the discussions, no matter the weight of the decision being made. Everyone should know they can contribute. Encourage open/free communication. A fully informed team has value and trust. This increases a sense of belonging and increases commitment to work.

Have a strong work ethic

Your work ethic should not only include how you feel about your job or career. It should also show how seriously you take your responsibilities. This involves attitude, behavior, respect for others, effective communication, and interaction. Your work ethic shows who and how you are.

Be trustworthy

What is trust? Trust is an essential factor that brings exceptional results in any relationship, especially at work and in professional life. Trust is not a simple nameplate on the door, a welcoming sign saying,  “you can trust me”. It encompasses all of your effort to bring in and promote that. Trust is earned by putting in constant efforts in actions and deeds. When you show trust, you earn team members who will truly work to see success in all the right ways, thus increasing work commitment.

Celebrate success together

Your team needs to feel validated and valued; how you lead them will be the indicator. Your team will stand by you and help you make the change you want to make if you show their opinions matter, if you treat them fairly, if you recognize their achievements, and if you make them feel they are an integral part of the success.

D.  Simple steps to get you to fully commit.

 Determine what change you want to make.

Before you can stay committed to changing, you need to be clear about what change you want to make. If there is more than one, list them all and be as specific as possible. This is one of the most vital ingredients in making your dream a reality.

Revisit your change list frequently.

Making the list isn’t a “one and done” sort of deal. You need to revisit your list frequently. It might not actually be daily, but it should be something that you make a regular habit.

Set routines.

Routines might seem boring, but they can take places (i.e., making millions). You just want to make sure they’re positive routines.

Stay inspired.

Sometimes your motivation needs a little nudge in the right direction. Seeking external inspiration can be a great way to stay on track with the change you want to make.

Look at the big picture.

It’s easy to lose sight of your reason to change and feel your motivation diminish when times get tough. Unfortunately, since tough times and mistakes are inevitable, you need to learn coping mechanisms so that you don’t give up.

Stay accountable.

Self-motivation is extremely difficult. While you need it to be successful, it is good to have a support  network (accountability team) to help keep you accountable.

Don’t burn out.

Believe it or not, sometimes taking time off is the best thing you can do to get closer to your making your desired change. When you burnout, it’s going to feel impossible to stay on track. Everything will seem too hard.

Follow the information provided in this article. And once you’ve done that, do it again. To stay committed to the change you want to make, you need to work hard, nurture the items on your list, and make notes of the accomplishments you are making, no matter how small. These tips are not a onetime thing. They are things you should do constantly to remind yourself of the change  you want to make and stay on track.

Why is commitment to your business essential for success?

One reason businesses fail is the business owner wasn’t committed enough. If you don’t commit to your business, you are sending yourself a message that you don’t expect to succeed. If you truly expect your business to succeed, go all in.

If you honestly believed that success was inevitable for your business, and that you were going to make the revenue you desire, work the hours you desire, do the work that you love, and have the freedom that you long for, wouldn’t you commit wholeheartedly to that process?

Ask yourself:

  * Why did I start the business?

  * Did I believe I could make a difference in my life and the lives of others with my product or service?

  * Did I change what I believe?

 If you still believe in your product or service, commit to it. If you don’t, no one else will and you won’t succeed.

How will commitment change your life?

When you commit to your business, it will not just strengthen your business and make it successful, it will change how you see yourself and life in general. You will:

  * Learn not to let every disappointment stop you.

  * Gain confidence.

  * Enjoy working in your business and living your life.

  * Live on purpose.

  * See your success in everything you do.

  * Find challenges no longer as overwhelming, just the next task.

  * Find that people can sense how committed you are and are more likely to invest in  and support you.

What does commitment look like?

Commitment starts with a choice. At some moment, you choose to make your business happen, no matter what. You choose to stick it out, no matter how long it takes. When you make that choice, you:

  * Create a quality product/service

  * Make your product/service quality by getting feedback and adjusting as needed

  * Invest and dedicate time to the business

  * Manage the resources of the business well to make sure the business has everything it needs to thrive

  * Create marketing materials to promote your product/service

  * Make sure your marketing educates your target audience about what you offer and is not just fluff

  * Make sure your customers to get the results they desire, and you promised

How long will it take to get results after you commit?

This is different for everyone and depends on the product/service, your operating expenditure, and the strategies you use to grow your business. However, in my experience, in my consulting experience and from what I’ve read, I believe the more you commit to your business, the faster your results. Keep in mind though, no matter how committed you are, getting results from a business is not usually a quick process. While it may take time to see real profits, there are steps you can take to speed things up. Here are some points to keep in mind.

  * Profitability depends on business type

Your small business will only start making a profit once you’ve paid overhead expenses and taxes. So the less you have to pay to run your business, the quicker you’ll reach profitability.

  * Reduce overhead

You don’t need to focus all your attention on sales to become profitable. Sometimes the answer is right in front of you. Look at every part of your business to find opportunities to lower costs and reduce overhead.

  * Focus on selling smarter

Can’t reduce your costs? Then look at growing your revenue. By keeping a close eye on monthly revenue trends, you can tell what is and isn’t working in your business and make profit-boosting adjustments.

  * Outsource time-consuming tasks

You could spend hours navigating the latest marketing trends, crafting sales emails, or getting in the weeds of financial spreadsheets. And many entrepreneurs do. But paying an expert to handle tasks you don’t like or aren’t knowledgeable about can be a much faster route to profitability than struggling alone.

Being committed to your business matters because it allows you to establish and work toward the goals you have set. Remember why you are making the change. They define what your business will be and give you a larger purpose. As a business owner, when you work from a place of commitment, realizing success will be easier.

MORE From Ministry Development

you bring everyone else in the church along a bit. A rising tide raises all the boats in the harbor.

Focus on raising the commitment of your leadership, not of those who are the least committed in the crowd or even the semi-committed in your congregation. Whenever you raise the standard of commitment for those who are in the most visible positions of leadership, it raises the expectations among everyone else.

You must ask people for commitment

If you don’t ask people for commitment, you won’t get it. You have not because you ask not.

It’s amazing to me that many community organizations require more from participants than local churches do. If you’ve ever been a Little League parent, you know that when your child signed up to play; you were required to make a major commitment to provide refreshments, transportation, trophies, and victory parties besides attendance. There was nothing voluntary about it! It was required if you wanted to take part.

One of the most helpful things a church can do for people is to help them clarify what commitments they ought to make and what commitments they ought to decline. Many people are half-committed to two dozen causes rather than being totally committed to the things that really matter.

The barrier to spiritual growth is not lack of commitment, but over-commitment to the wrong things.

You must teach people to make wise commitments.

Ask confidently for a “big commitment”

Study how Jesus asked for commitment. He was always clear and confident when he asked for it. He was not at all reluctant to ask grown men and women to drop everything and follow him. This is an interesting phenomenon: the greater the commitment you request, the greater the response you will get. People want to be committed to something that gives significance to their lives. They respond to responsibilities that give life meaning. They are attracted to a challenging vision. They want to be a part of something worthwhile.

People are unmoved by weak appeals and pitiful requests for help. Jesus knew this when he said in Luke 14:33, “None of you can be my disciples unless you give up everything” (GW).

Some pastors are afraid to ask for a “big commitment”, fearing they will drive people away. But people do not resent being asked for a “big commitment” if there is a noble purpose behind it.

People respond to passionate vision, not need

That’s why most stewardship campaigns don’t work: They focus on the needs of the church rather than the vision of the church. If people were really motivated by organizational needs, then every time you presented a need, they would immediately meet it.

  * Be specific in asking for commitment

Another key to developing commitment is being specific. Tell people exactly what you expect of them. At Saddleback we ask people to commit to Christ, then to baptism, then to membership, then to the habits for maturity, then to ministry, and finally to fulfilling their life mission.

  * Explain the benefits of commitment

Another key to developing commitment in people is to identify the benefits of it. God does this. So many of the commands in Scripture have promises attached to them. I once did a study of the promises attached to God’s commands to be generous. We always end up being blessed whenever we’re obedient. Explain the personal benefits, the family benefits, the benefits to the body of Christ and society and the eternal benefits of committing to spiritual growth. People really have an innate desire to learn, to grow, and to improve.

  * Build on commitment rather than toward commitment

Even though you tell people where you are taking them (by challenging them with a big commitment), you start with whatever commitment they can give. Begin with an initial commitment, regardless of how weak it may seem. We challenge people to make a commitment and then grow into it. It’s like choosing to become a parent. Very few couples feel competent to parent before they have their first child. But somehow—after they decide and a baby is born—the couple grows into their parenting role.

You must find ways for people to take baby steps while also elevating your expectations of them; your church will be healthier.

MORE From Personal Development

Therefore, it’s essential to put a system in place to help you stay emotionally and energetically committed to making the change you decided needed to be made. The last few months, we:

  * Identified the need to change.

  * Created a  vision of who we want to be in the future because of the change.

  * Made sure our change would be meaningful, and it was a change we wanted to make.

  * Looked at both our strengths and our weaknesses to align us to the change.

  * Chose to make the change. We saw that we ultimately would do what we love to do, which ensured our energy and excitement would stay high.

Here are some other simple tips to help stay committed to the change:

  * Believe in the need to change

You’ll have higher levels of excitement and motivation when you’re clear on what you want to achieve and the difference making the change will make. If you can clearly see a better life, you are more likely to stay committed to take the action needed.

  * See beyond the change

The change, we decided to make, is often not the thing we really want to achieve; it is what the change will allow us to do that is most important to us. Therefore, it’s essential to see beyond the change. Try listing five things you will do differently when you make the change. This should create the excitement, energy, and motivation to help you stay committed. Also, if you can clearly see how making this change will leave a lasting impact  and transform your life meaningfully, you’ll stay committed.

  * Set milestones

Increased energy and commitment come from seeing progress. To help you do this, set milestones. Change takes time. As you see yourself hitting the milestones, you will get boosts energy and excitement. With each milestone you hit, you will get the confidence and renewed commitment to achieve the next one.

  * Measure your progress

It’s easy to lose motivation, feel stuck, and lose confidence when you experience roadblocks. Especially when you don’t see success as soon as you thought you would. To stay committed, measure the progress and gains you’ve made. This will keep your energy and confidence high.

  * Get more accountability

It’s tough to stay committed to achieving your change by yourself. Having an accountability structure helps you stay focused, ensures you take action, and provides perspective when things don’t go according to plan. Working with an accountability coach, accountability partner, or peer group can help you stay committed and on track.

  * Plan wisely

To stay committed to your change, focus your time on the activities that will help you be successful. It’s easy to do many activities that you think will help you reach your goal. However, in reality, the breakthroughs and progress come from a few important ones. When planning your week, identify the four or five activities or projects that will help you make meaningful progress toward change and then plan your time accordingly.

  * Work with a coach

If you want more focused accountability, a coach is what you need. Your coach will help create a clear plan and path to achieve the change you want to make. When you experience roadblocks and obstacles, a coach will provide the inspiration and motivation to help you stay on track and committed.

By incorporating some of these tips and tools into your workday, you’ll give yourself a better chance of staying committed to achieving the change you envisioned.
